November 13, 2017 Rehearsal Notes
There are six pieces to memorize and only three rehearsals left. Don wants the memory work done by next week so please work hard on that. This week he called on singers at random to recite the text we were to have memorized, so be ready! 

Silent Night
Tutti begin at measure 33. Please note at measures 37 and 38 that the  notes for the women are not what you are used to. Sing what is written, NOT what you know.

Stress consonants 
At measure  28 move the line forward.Departs is pronounced dih-partsPage 8 at the 9/8 put a glottal stop on the first word.More forceful “f” on forever from measure 83 on.

p. 3, Women - pick up to C, this is an E natural - it's higher than you might think

Page 5 measure 52 Nascitur is pronounced Na shi tur. Observe the crescendo at 58, 59.  Put dots over the quarter notes in measure 57. Crescendo measure 65 to the FF
Inferno is pronounced in FUHR noh with a schwa on the middle syllable
Page 6 Men count 6 measures before your entry. Measure 83 84 no breath and measure 89 to 90 no breath

Please review especially the humming and “oo”‘s” in After the War. Don went over these.

Page 6 NO BREATH at measure 49 only a slight lift to measure 50
Page 7 measure 58: off on 3rd count.
Don’t forget the coda!

Luminous Night
Page 16 thru 18 Don wants a more gradual and subtle crescendo. We’re too loud too soon.page 20 Altos: sing a little louder at the FF
Page 23 ALL: slow diminuendo but keep the vowels tall, don’t let them sag.
Page 37 to 8 Alto II’s do not sing “dawn” in measure 165. it is intentionally left out by the composer
Page 41 ALL: observe dynamics as marked at letter J. Basses softer on your piano.
Page 49 ALL: NO BREATH before the FF.                    

FernHill
Page 18 ALL: we are dragging the triplets a little. Don asks us to tighten this up.
Page 51: ALL: crisp diction on each word starting at the 6/8 second system.

Winter Light
Everyone: be precise about note values, especially ending notes. Don wants us to cut off more precisely.

Everyone needs to work on this during the week. We had little time to rehearse it and there are several rough spots.

Page 8 observe the mp at measure 35.
Page 9 watch for the accelerando in measure 58.

Page 4 measure 33 remove the dot from the half note and breathe on the rest created.

In measure 41 altos, tenors and bases _ remove the dot and breathe.

Dark Night - We are changing this piece out for Gjeilo's Luminous Night of the Soul. We hope you will find your copies from last October's concert and bring it to future rehearsals. We will have additional copies at our September 25th rehearsal. (No charge.)

Page 4 men - don wants a brighter sound on the A natural in measure 7
ALL note the pochissimo rit. in measure 10

Sops in measure 24 breathe on the rest and in measure 25 cresc. On the quarter note, no breath in measure 26
Rallentando Sops in measure 27 on Domine, and. Mark your score with glasses or WATCH marking of some kind where the altos join in becuase Don will change the tempo.
Page 8 measure 5: women - cut off on the eighth note. Men -  put a comma instead of the first eighth note of the first triplet and take a quick breath.
Latin is italian pronunciation inthis one.

Winterlight
Clear diction throughout.
Page 7 measure 60 louder here
Measure 62 to 63 NO BREATHon pages 8 and 9 on the "gong" : be sure of your pitches. Alto II's the tenors sing B flat on the second note of "again". Don wants a very definite initial hard G sound followed immediately with a resonant NG and then a definite "uh" termination. Same instructions for the Gong on page 9
Page 10 Sops  pencil in a tie on the last two whole notes.
Page 11 definite hard G on "gone". 
On the words "fire, flame and cold" please emphasize the initial consonants.
age 19 et al>: watch the entries  on "silver and Crimson"and be sure of your pitches. Also for "frozen, gleaming"
Note the MP at measure 113 sops.

Page 12: again we have poco a poco accelerando in the first system and Faster in the second system. Watch Don!

Page 45 last measure of the second. System put a glottal on the last word "est"
The latin is GERMAN Latin pronunciation.

A clean score is a dangerous score! (DMK)
Handel
Sopranos: on intervals too high notes as in measure 10, separate just a little and no portamento. Measure16 on the dotted 8th slight trill.
ALL: measure 33 page 4: erase the dot on the half note and replace with a quarter rest and breathe. Measure 34 is the beginning of the repeat from the end of measure 58.
ALL: erase the dot on the half note in measure 37 and add a quarter rest.
Altos, Tenors and Basses: at measure 41 erase the dot on the half or quarter note and replace with a rest and breathe.
Sops and Basses: on the word "glorious" measure 47 pronounce the "rious" on the last quarter note with the A's and T's
ALL: measure 49 remove the dot and add a quarter rest but Do Not breathe and lift slightly. Throughout emphasize the consonant production. Measure 58 add a fermata to the half note.

Gjielo
7/4 time will be counted 1 2, 1 2, 1 2 3. The 6/4 in 2.
Tenors and Basses Measure 152 slight rallentando
Tenors: page 26 measure 170 Tenor 1's take the notes with stems up and tenor 2 notes with stems down. Please look carefully. Measure 171 tenors eliminate the lower D
ALL:Breaths are to be marked in measure 76 before "the"; measure 178 before 179; measure 180 before "the"; measure 182 before the dotted half note (im not sure if I got that right. It seems an odd place to breathe. Anyone got a correction for me?); breathe after the last note in measure 186 and place a rallentando over the last note.
Page 33: Carry the line from Measure 215 to 216 and then remove the dot on the first half note of 216 and take a breath.
Page 34 measure 220 the strings will be playing our E natural for 221.
Tenors at the three part splits T1 will be only antoine, doug, doug and ryan. T2 and 3 were designated by Don.

Fernhill
Parts are available on Youtube.  Matthew Curtis sings them. 
Page 8 first two measures No breath. The change from Forte to subito piano is abrupt and there is no slowing!
Breathe in measure 71 on the quarter rest.
Page 10 measure 78 to 79 no breath
Page 12 measure 92 to 93 no breath.  Breathe after measure 94. At the ppp separate the syllables to emphasize.
Page 15 measure 123 the "rns of barns is on the last count
Page 17 the Z sound on means is pronounced on the eighth note of measure144
Page 24 the d sound of "cold" should be pronounced very definitely.
Page 33 at the animando the pace will pick up so watch don.

Breath measure 95 on the rest.
There are lots of triplets in this piece. Practice the rhythms
Measure 97 pronounce a clear D at the end of "cold"
Measure 14 the pace will pick up here. And picks up moreat measure 317
Observe the fff at measure 326 and again at 443
Tenors at measure 463 you split into T1,T2 and T3

After the War
Sopranos measure 17 you split but both sections have 2 eighthnotes on "love" and the next 4 notes on "you"

Winter Light
Measure 52 tenors the F is correct the bases are above you there on the G
All - on the word Gong, pease emphasize the initial hard G and the endind NG sound
